Service Learning at GIS
Service Learning starts in the classroom and extends beyond it, requiring students to take an active part in the communities in which they live. Giving importance to the sense of community throughout the programme encourages responsible citizenship and seeks to deepen the student’s knowledge and understanding of the world around them.
Service
Service in the International Baccalaureate programmes refers to meaningful and purposeful actions taken by students to contribute to their communities, both locally and globally. It emphasizes selflessness, empathy, and a commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others.
Action
Action in the International Baccalaureate programmes refers to students’ active engagement with their learning, their communities, and the world. It goes beyond service and encompasses a wide range of actions that contribute to personal growth and the development of lifelong skills and attitudes.
Primary Years Programme
Action is at the core of the Primary Years Programme. It drives learning across, between, and beyond traditional subject boundaries. Students are frequently encouraged to seek and apply action from the units of inquiry they study, which is best exhibited in Grade 5 as part of the PYP exhibition.
The students are expected to be active citizens and to take action to show understanding, apply knowledge and skills, reflect, and often make a contribution to a cause or stimulate positive change.
Middle Years Programme
Service as action (community service) is an integral part of the Middle Years Programme. Students act when they apply what they are learning in the classroom to life outside it. IB learners strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others and the environment.
Diploma Programme
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) is one of the core components that students must complete as part of the Diploma Programme, enabling students to enhance their personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning and
a journey of self-discovery. Creativity encourages students to engage in the arts and creative thinking. Activity seeks to develop a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. Service to the community offers a vehicle for new learning with academic value.
Career-related Programme
Community Engagement is one of the four core components of the Career-related Programme. Through Community Engagement students learn in, from, and with communities. It allows students to apply their academic and career-related skills to real-world social needs through reciprocal collaboration.
